Dear Parents,
Listed below you will find some important information about our class. Thank you for taking the time to go through it.
Agenda:
The agenda will be used on a daily basis as a communication and reflection tool. Therefore, your child should bring his/her agenda to school everyday. I sign it at the end of the day. If possible, please sign it, too.
Class Website: http://lesfourmis.weebly.com
Please visit it regularly for information on important dates and events, communications with parents, daily schedule, and more.
Homework:
My philosophy around homework is that it can be useful learning time. It allows to practice work habits such as keeping track of what is due and finding a time to sit and focus. For it to be successful, however, it needs to be meaningful and of value (i.e. students know why they are asked to do homework and how it relates to what they are learning) and students can do the work mostly independently. At home, it’s best to help your child establish a routine, provide a quiet space and appropriate materials. In grade 5, not more than 50 minutes per day, ideally around 30, should be spent on homework per night (including reading). It is important for student to have a balance of focus, play and connecting with family time in their day. Also, keep in mind that your child requires 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night to learn best in class. Following is what you can expect your child to be doing for homework this year:
Reading Program: By the end of the month, students will bring their reading log (in a duo-tang) detailing the reading expectations for the year. Students may borrow books from the classroom library, the school library or use books from home for our program. I recommend at least 20 minutes of daily reading at home.
Math: I encourage you to play weekly math games with your child at home. Games such as Rummy, Cribbage, Yahtzee, Chess, and Checkers are fun, and a great way to practice math skills. From time to time, I will be sending games for you to try. Students might have to complete some math work at home.
Other: Students will also be asked to complete work not finished in class (particularly in math), to research projects, or to study. Please check their agenda and our website for more details.
Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are required during our out of school activities. Please let me know if you can help in anyway.
Scholastic:
Every other month or so, I will send home scholastic orders. If you choose to order books and are writing a checque, please address it to me (Sabrina Bouayad). I order online and find it much easier to pay with Visa rather than to send the cheques by mail. Thanks.
Emails:
I have sent one email home so far. If you have not received it, you are not on my list. Please let me know so I can add you to the list.
Parent/Student Survey:
I’m attaching surveys for you and your child. Please take the time to complete and return them at your convenience. These surveys help me understand you and your child more fully.
Activities and Fees:
This year our class will have the opportunity to go to recreational swimming and skating as well as receiving swimming lessons at the Canada Games Centre. We will also participate in many activities throughout the school year including: field trips, visits to museums, concerts at the Yukon Arts Center, and more.
Here are the dates:
Skating: Friday, October 23rd from 1:45 to 2:30 pm
Swimming: Tuesday, October 27th from 1:00 to 1:45 pm
Skating: Tuesday, March 1st from 9:00 to 9:45 am
Swimming: Tuesday, June 7th from 1:45 to 2:30 pm
Swimming Lessons (x8): Tuesday to Friday for 2 weeks from 9:00 to 9:45am
January 5 to 8 and 12 to 15.
Per child, it costs $3 to go swimming, $2.50 to go skating and $47 for swimming lessons. We will also participate in many activities throughout the school year including: field trips, and more. To make things easier I would ask you to pay a single activity fee of $30 to cover the cost of other field trips (visits to MAD, museums, concerts at the Yukon Arts Center…)
Here is a breakdown of the cost:
Agenda $ 8
Swimming ($3 X 2) $ 6
Skating ($2.5 X 2)$ 5
Swimming Lessons $ 47
Activity Fee$ 30
Total $ 96
You can pay in cash or write a check to Whitehorse Elementary School. You will be issued a receipt. If you have already paid the agenda your total is then $88.
Please feel free to contact me with your ideas and questions at the school (667-8083 ext.207) or by email ([email protected]). I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
Sincerely,
Sabrina Bouayad
