Dear parents,
It has been great meeting you. After conversations and feedback, and now that most of our routines and expectations are established, I am suggesting a schedule for homework (to complete work unfinished in class or look through the work completed). I’m hoping this routine will help us establish good working habits to support your child’s learning. It should take 20 to 30 minutes. Of course, it can be modified to suit your family’s needs and schedules. Student will bring the following work home on the selected day and should return it to school the next:
Monday: Math (binder)
Students are working through centers during the week. They might not have time to complete the work or could use extra practice. Here is what is expected and where you can/could support them:
Games (Jeux)
Every week, we play a new game linked to our curriculum content. Students should be able to talk about the skills the game practices. It is also good to talk about the various strategies used to play (or win) the game. Playing with your child is a great opportunity to model the strategies learned. It can be done by commenting on the strategies as you play.
Independent Work (Travail indépendent):
Students should complete and correct their work for the week. These worksheets are levelled. Students should be able to work through them independently. If you notice they can’t or it’s too easy, let me know. I will provide work at their level. They are also provided a correction sheet and should be correcting their work with a highlighter or coloured crayon. They know how to do this.
Practice (Pratique)
Work to be completed after students have met with me in small groups. It usually consists of a worksheet. The work should be completed by the time they meet with me again so we can discuss and correct it.
Title page: Stamps should be put for each center by the end of the week. The dates also indicate the time by which the work is expected to be done. Usually I run one cycle of centers over two weeks.
Vocabulary page: Words and images will be added as necessary. If you notice your child struggling with a word in particular, please have him or her write it down and share it with me.
Tuesday: Révision de la semaine (duo-tang).
Every week, usually on Mondays, I give a short quiz to review the week (révision de la semaine). Students have 30 minutes and access to all their learning materials to complete it. I then corrected and hand it back. I expect students to correct or complete the parts they missed. Please review the quiz with them and sign it.
Wednesday: Reading (duo-tang).
Reading in French is done in class. I recommend that your child reads daily at home (at least 20 min). We are recording all book read in our carnet de lecture. We also set a monthly reading goal. Here you can help make sure your child has recorded the titles in their carnet, have discussions about book he/she has read and check his/her goal to see if it’s a realistic one. We have our library period the following day. This is a great opportunity to write down the library books that have been read, and to return them to school the next day.
These are the areas we will focus on for now.
Thanks for your support,
Sabrina
